There are various types of universities in China, mainly divided into the following categories:

  • * Comprehensive universities:

    These universities have a wide range of academic disciplines, including liberal arts, sciences, engineering, agriculture, medicine, law, management, and art. Examples include Peking University and Tsinghua University. They typically have strong overall strength and high academic reputations.

  • * Technical universities:

    These universities focus on natural sciences and engineering, emphasizing scientific research and technological innovation. Examples include Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University. They have significant advantages in engineering, natural sciences, and other fields.

  • * Normal universities:

    These universities aim to train teachers and educational workers. Examples include Beijing Normal University and East China Normal University. They have strong disciplinary strength in education, psychology, and literature.

  • * Specialized schools:

    These include sports, art, and agricultural universities, as well as financial universities. These schools specialize in a specific field or industry, such as the Central Academy of Fine Arts, China Agricultural University, and the Central University of Finance and Economics.

  • * Language universities:

    These universities specialize in language-related disciplines, such as Beijing Foreign Studies University and Shanghai International Studies University.

  • * Medical universities:

    These universities specialize in medical-related disciplines, such as Beijing Union Medical College and Tianjin Medical University.

  • * Law universities:

    These universities specialize in law and political science, such as China University of Political Science and Law and Southwest University of Political Science and Law.

  • * Ethnic universities:

    These universities are divided into central nationality-related universities and local ethnic universities. Although they offer a variety of programs, they are not limited to "ethnic" programs.

About Diplomas and Degrees

In mainland China, the degree system is divided into three main levels: bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctoral degree. Of these, the doctorate is the highest degree. In addition, there are some special types of degrees, such as professional degrees and associate degrees. Professional degrees are clearly distinguished from academic degrees in graduate education, and both are regarded as equally important, aiming to cultivate different types of high-level innovative talents. Degrees are usually listed in the following order from lowest to highest: high school/junior college/vocational high school, college, bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctoral degree.

Bachelor's Degree:
Usually requires 3-4 years of full-time study and is the basic degree of higher education.
Master's Degree:
After obtaining a Bachelor's Degree, it usually takes 2-3 years of full-time study.
Doctorate or PhD:
After a Master's Degree, usually requires 3-5 years of full-time research and thesis writing.

Currently there are 14 disciplinary categories of undergraduate programs in Chinese universities: Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management, Art, Military Science, and Interdisciplinary

  • (1) Literature

    The Literature category contains four specialized categories, namely Chinese Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Literature, Journalism and Communication, and Journalism and Communication (cross-specialization).

  • (2) History

    Contains only 1 specialized category of History.

  • (3) Philosophy

    Contains only 1 specialized category of Philosophy.

  • (4) Law

    In the category of Law, there are six specialized categories, namely, Law, Political Science, Sociology, Ethnology, Marxism Theory, and Public Security.

  • (5) Economics

    The economics discipline contains four specialized categories, namely, Economics, Fiscal Study, Finance, and Business trade.

  • (6) Management

    The management discipline contains nine specialized categories, namely, E-commerce, Business administration, Industrial engineering, Public administration, Management science and Engineering, Hospitality management, Agricultural economics and management, Library and archives management, and Logistics management and engineering.

  • (7) Education

    The education discipline contains 2 specialized categories, namely, Education and Physical education.

  • (8) Science

    The science discipline contains 11 specialized categories. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Geographic Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Marine Sciences, Geology, Biological Sciences, Psychology, and Statistics.

  • (9) Engineering

    Under the engineering discipline, it contains 31 professional categories, which is the discipline that contains the most majors, and is also the main focus of the college enrollment plan. Mainly includes: Mining, Textile, Light industry, Transportation, Marine engineering, Aerospace, Military engineering, Nuclear engineering, Agricultural engineering, Forestry engineering, Environmental science and engineering, Biomedical engineering, Food science and engineering, Construction, Safety science and engineering, Bioengineering, Public security technology.

  • (10) Agronomy

    Under the category of Agronomy, it contains seven specialized categories, namely, Herbology, Animal Production, Animal Medicine, Forestry, Aquaculture, Plant Production, and Nature Conservation and Environmental Ecology.

  • (11) Medicine

    Containing 11 specialized categories: Fundamental medicine, Clinical medicine, Stomatology, Traditional Chinese medicine, Integrated Chinese and Western medicine, Forensic medicine, Medical technology.

  • (12) Art Studies

    Common categories of specialization are: Art theory, Music and Dance, Drama and Film, Fine arts and Design.
