Scholarship

In order to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the people of China and people of other countries, and to promote exchanges and cooperation in politics, economy, culture, education, trade and other fields between China and countries around the world, the Chinese government has established scholarships to support outstanding students, teachers and scholars from all over the world to study or conduct research at Chinese universities. The Chinese Ministry of Education has entrusted the China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as the "National Scholarship Fund Committee") with the responsibility for the admission and management of Chinese government scholarship students in China. Currently, 279 Chinese universities are responsible for the training of Chinese government scholarship students. Students can choose majors in twelve disciplinary categories, including natural sciences, engineering, agriculture, medicine, law, economics, management, education, literature, history, philosophy, art and other fields.

The Chinese government scholarships include the following programs:
01 Country Bilateral Projects

Full or partial scholarships provided by governments, institutions, schools, and international organizations of relevant countries, as per agreements on educational cooperation and exchange signed by China and these countries or consensus reached by both sides. This program can enroll undergraduates, graduate students, doctoral students, ordinary visiting scholars, and senior visiting scholars.

The applicant should apply to the student exchange department of their home country.

02 Self-admission programs offered by Chinese universities

The Scholarships provided by the Ministry of Education of China to some provincial education administrative departments of China and some Chinese universities are intended for the direct selection and admission of outstanding young foreign students to study for postgraduate degrees in China. This program only admits master's and doctoral students.

Applicants should apply to the Chinese universities that are undertaking this project.

03 Self-admission programs offered by Chinese universities

Scholarships provided by UNESCO are used to support students and scholars from developing countries who come to China for study and research. This program only accepts regular trainees and advanced trainees.

The applicant should submit an application to the National Commission for UNESCO in their home country.

04 China-EU Student Exchange Program

Scholarships for students from EU member states are offered to encourage EU member state students to study and conduct research in China, promote mutual understanding and exchange. This program can enroll undergraduates, graduate students, doctoral students, ordinary visiting students, and senior visiting students.

Applicants should apply to the Education and Culture Section of the Chinese Embassy to the EU.

05 China-AUN Scholarship Program

The Scholarships provided by the Association of Southeast Asian Universities (AUN) are aimed at encouraging young students, teachers, and scholars from ASEAN member states to study and exchange in China, promoting mutual understanding and friendship. This program only accepts applicants for master's and doctoral degrees.

Applicants should submit their applications to the Secretariat of the ASEAN University Network (AUN).

06 Pacific Islands Forum Programme

Scholarships for students from Pacific island countries in the region are offered to encourage and support young students from these countries to study in China. This program can enroll undergraduates, graduate students, doctoral students, ordinary visiting students, and senior visiting students.

Applicants should submit their applications to the Secretariat of the Pacific Islands Forum.

07 World Meteorological Organization Project

Providing scholarships to the World Meteorological Organization aims to encourage students from all over the world who are interested in studying and conducting research in the field of meteorology to come to China for learning and research. This program can enroll undergraduate students, graduate students, and doctoral students.

The applicant should submit an application to the World Meteorological Organization.

Types of scholarships, duration, language of instruction, institutions and majors

Funding Category: The Chinese government scholarship program provides funding for outstanding foreign students, teachers, and scholars to study for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees, as well as for Chinese language or specialized study in China.

Duration of Sponsorship: The duration of the Chinese government scholarship includes the duration of professional studies and Chinese language supplementary study (preparatory course), as shown in the following table:

Language of instruction

1.The teaching language for undergraduate students receiving Chinese government scholarships in China is Chinese. Undergraduate students receiving Chinese government scholarships to study in China must undergo a one-year program of Chinese language and basic knowledge study at designated preparatory schools before starting their undergraduate major studies. Individuals who meet either of the following two criteria may apply for exemption from the pre-university education:

Foreign students who complete their secondary education with Chinese as their language of instruction. A certificate from their graduation school stating that Chinese was the language of instruction for the compulsory courses during their secondary education should be attached.

The applicant's Chinese language proficiency should meet the admission requirements for undergraduate education at the target institution. At the time of application, a copy of the valid HSK (short for the Chinese Proficiency Test) score report should be attached. The validity period of the HSK score report is two years.

2. The language of instruction for postgraduate and advanced students studying in China is usually Chinese, while some universities offer English instruction for certain programs.

Students who have been awarded China Scholarship and whose Chinese proficiency is not up to the standard for professional study must take 1-2 years of Chinese language study before they can start their professional studies. Otherwise, they will not be able to continue their studies under the China Scholarship program in China. Among them, those studying in fields such as science, engineering, agriculture, medicine (Western medicine), economics, management, law, and arts should take 1-year Chinese language study; those studying in fields such as literature, history, philosophy, and medicine (traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese herbs) should take Chinese language study for no more than 2 years.

Scholarship students whose proficiency in English or Chinese has reached the required level for professional study are exempt from language supplementary classes.

About Full scholarship
Tuition fees:
Tuition fees are used by the school as a whole for the training, management, and organization or support of scholarship students in activities such as sports, cultural and artistic events, and visits.
Accommodation fee:
The school provides free dormitories or housing allowance. Students who are required to live on campus by the school will be provided with free dormitories, which are generally double rooms. Students who are approved by the school to live off campus will be given housing allowance by the school on a monthly or quarterly basis.
